Vinny Agee was fantastic in Fluvanna’s state quarterfinal victory over James Monroe. Sure, his 19 points were crucial. But the freshman’s effort on the defensive end was what turned the game for Fluvanna. At the top of an aggressive zone in the fourth quarter, Agee forced turnovers repeatedly and created fastbreak opportunities galore for the Flucos, putting Fluvanna back in Richmond again.

Nkechi Illang was rock solid underneath for the Saints in STAB’s first round victory over Nansemond Suffolk, posting a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The performance helped the Saints maintain a solid streak of several years with at least one postseason victory.

Anytime anyone goes for 20 or more points in the defensive slugfests that Blue Ridge and Miller always put together, it’s noteworthy. But 27? From a pass-first point guard? Darryl Smith was sublime against Miller in the VIC final and a big reason the Barons picked up another conference tournament title to make it a sweep in 2012 of the regular season and the tourney.

Molly Shepherd carried the Mustangs in Monticello’s clash with John Handley in the Region II quarterfinals, scoring 16 points in the Mustangs’ first ever playoff victory as a program. Shepherd, a freshman, is a big reason the Mustangs’ future is so bright.

Doug Sizemore may have ended his high school wrestling career with a loss, but the William Monroe senior’s valiant effort in a run to the Group A final in Salem was impressive. Sizemore then took his opponent in the final to the brink, finally falling in double overtime.
