Chase Stokes saw Fluvanna pull within a point late in Friday night’s Jefferson District opening clash, but Western’s junior was determined that’s where it would end. Stokes scored 11 of his 16 points in the final quarter as part of a grind-it-out defensive struggle between the two teams.
Madison County got going quickly against William Monroe Wednesday night and behind Renee Lucas’ 10 points and 14 rebounds against the Dragons never let up in a 38-26 victory over Monroe. If Lucas and Abby Erb, who had 11 boards continue to dominate the glass, Madison County can be a major factor in the Bull Run District race.
Everyone already knew that that Denzel Terry, Jhalil Mosley and James Banks gave Monticello a dangerous, fast and versatile backcourt. But throw in a swingman like Johvan Shelton who can put it in the hole? Suddenly guarding the Mustangs just became a game of pick-your-poison. Shelton unleashed a 25-point outing against Albemarle in a big out-of-district win for Monticello, scoring 15 of those 25 in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs rallied and pulled away from the Patriots.

About the Girls' AotW:
Orange County needed a win in the worst way against archrival Louisa County, something to give the Hornets some momentum going into the bulk of their Commonwealth District schedule. Markiana Smith helped get them there with a team-high 16 points in the Hornets’ 49-26 win over the Lions. She was an instrumental part of a big third quarter for Orange that created some separation for the Hornets as Smith, Ashanti Demas and Rebecca Harvey combined for 14 points in the crucial stretch.
While football season was over for everyone else in Central Virginia, Goochland kept chugging along and Saturday earned the ultimate prize, a Division 2, Group AA state title, with sophomore Jordan Jefferson leading the way. Jefferson had an interception on defense as part of an incredible effort by the Bulldogs to clamp down on Essex’s high-flying spread attack. On offense he completed both his pass attempts, going 2-for-2 for 22 yards and he rushed for a team-high 110 yards on 16 touches. Not bad for a guy who could, potentially, play in two more of these games.

About the Girls' AotW:
In three games last week, Riggelman helped spark the Mavericks to a trio of victories, averaging 12.7 points per game including a team-high 14 points in a win over Chancellor High. Riggleman’s emergence as an offensive weapon should free things up more for Miller’s seasoned veterans like Whitney Martin and Taylor Sandidge.
