Region II playoff structure leaves Warriors on outside looking in

by Bart Isley   |   February 20th, 2012

It doesn’t make much sense. It’s hard to fathom even.

A 16-7 team isn’t going to make the playoffs.

In a state where over the last couple of years teams with just one win have qualified via the state’s often frustrating and inequitable divisional and regional playoff structure, a capable, overachieving group of Western Albemarle boys basketball players won’t participate in the Region II playoffs.

The Region II boys playoff picture

by Bart Isley   |   February 16th, 2012

Quick thought on Super Bowl introductions

by Bob Isley   |   February 8th, 2012

Interesting conversation on Super Bowl coverage regarding the Patriots’ decision to run out on the field as a team in Super Bowl XXXVI. That introduction isn’t the form for today’s games. Did they take away the fun or recognition an individual’s experience in being introduced before the big game?  High school and colleges during football season generally stick with the tradition of the team running on the field. There is something electrifying seeing one our “stars” run on the field and receive their adoration from the crowd.

In fact, I’d venture to say it’s a first.

But Wednesday, five Monticello students tipped us off that Friday was going to be an interesting night.

They delivered.

If crowd support were an arms race, Monticello may have just developed an atomic bomb.

by Bart Isley   |   February 1st, 2012

A number of players across the state of Virginia, including Charlottesville's Mason Sherry have committed or are signing on today to join the newly-created football program at Alderson Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia.

We’ve seen a number of smaller colleges in West Virginia make an impact on recruiting here in Central Virginia like Glenville State. But this is one of the more unique cases, where a program is being built from scratch.

Here’s a story on how, and why, that program is being developed.
