Athlete Of The Week

This week’s players of the week have a Scrimmage Play prize pack headed their way complete with a Scrimmage Play t-shirt, an SP bumper sticker and a free value meal from Chick-fil-A to go with five free milkshakes for their friends, family or even their entourage if they've got one already.

Girls' Athlete of the Week

Boys' Athlete of the Week

Greer Brown

Fluvanna County track and field

Greer Brown had about as good a day at a track meet as anyone could possibly have. Brown was a huge reason Fluvanna’s girls track team won the Fred Hardy Invitational. She took second in the long jump, triple jump and high jump in a tough field. She also anchored the 4x200 relay and finished third in the 55-meter hurdles.  If Brown is this good all year, Fluvanna County is going to be headed for a thrilling season.

Billy Knabe

Orange County wrestling

Orange County heavyweight wrestler Billy Knabe didn't exactly care about Colonial Forge's top ranking in the state. Nor did he seem bothered by the high expectations people have for Stafford. In a Commonwealth District mini-match Knabe picked up a trio of pins to help his team post a 2-1 record on the evening that established the Hornets as the team to beat after Forge in the CD.

Monique Perkins

Charlottesville basketball

In their first Jefferson District game of the season, the Charlottesville girls basketball team picked up a much sought after win against Western Albemarle. They did so thanks to the two-way play that junior guard Monique Perkins provided. Not only did Perkins lead her team with 17 points in the 42-40 road win, she also hit crucial free throws late and chipped in four steals. As such, the Black Knights, albeit very early in JD play, appear to be in the driver's seat for this race.

Parker Morris

Western Albemarle basketball

Apparently, Western Albemarle, at least right now, has Charlottesville’s number, and Parker Morris is a big reason why. Morris, a sophomore, hit a crucial 3-pointer as part of his 20-point effort last week during the Warriors’ second recent victory over Charlottesville High. Morris buried five 3-pointers on the night in a huge performance.

Molly Shifflett

Madison County volleyball

Last week was a pretty fantastic one for Molly Shifflett. She was named Bull Run player of the year as well as first team all-Bull Run District and, more importantly, led her team to a district tournament championship in a five-game battle with Strasburg with an incredible all-around effort. Shifflett rang up 14 kills and played big time defense with 25 digs, leading the Mountaineers in both categories. Yeah, that’s a pretty fantastic week for the versatile senior.

Lee Carneal

Albemarle football

Summing up the impact Albemarle senior quarterback Lee Carneal had in his final high school game isn’t easy. Carneal threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns, scored two more on quarterback sneaks and led a game-winning 80-yard march that included a clutch scramble that kept the drive alive and a the winning scoring pass from nine yards out to Kevin Gaines. That was offense. He also picked off a pass and recovered a fumble from his safety spot on defense in the first half. See, that’s not easy to sum up.

Nicki Douma

Fluvanna County cross country

Nicki Douma didn’t win the individual title at the Jefferson District cross country championships, that honor went to Rachel Byrd from Powhatan. But Douma did help power the Flucos to a team title, the school’s first in the Jefferson District, with her second place individual finish. With the performance last week, the sophomore has clearly emerged as one of the area’s top young runners.

Rodrell Smith

Nelson County football

Nelson County needed a win. Something to hang their hat on in another frustrating season. On senior night Friday, Rodrell Smith made sure they got that win. Smith rushed for 211 yards on just 23 carries and four total touchdowns on the night. He also punched in four two-point conversions to total 32 points in the contest. The final score? 32-27 Nelson.

Maya Langman

Western Albemarle field hockey

Langman has the exact kind of short memory a goalie desperately needs. A few days after her beat-up Western Albemarle squad suffered through a shutout loss to St. Anne’s-Belfield, Langman stood strong in the cage and boosted the Warriors to a 1-0 victory over archrival Monticello that wrapped up another Jefferson District title. She capped the regular season with another shutout in the cage, a 6-0 win over Powhatan, giving Western a lot of momentum going into the postseason.

Kenneth Johnson

Buckingham County football

Kenneth Johnson has emerged as a big-time tailback this year for the Knights, who are currently in position to grab a Group A playoff berth. He spearheaded a huge rushing output last week against rival Cumberland, rushing for 206 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 touches. Johnson has piled up 734 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on the season for the high-octane Buckingham offense.

Mariah Williams

Monticello volleyball

Williams had two solid games as Monticello held onto its position in the top half of the Jefferson District with a win over Charlottesville where the setter had 20 assists and nine digs. She was also strong during a 5-game match with Powhatan that proved that any squad drawing the Mustangs in the postseason is going to have a fight on their hands. Williams had 29 assists and nine digs in the narrow loss to the Indians.

Alex O'Dell

Western Albemarle golf

Alex O’Dell has been a fixture on the course for the Warriors over the last four years and he’s racked up a number of individual honors including this year’s Jefferson District golfer of the year award. But there was likely nothing sweeter for the senior than finishing tied for fifth place at the state tournament with teammate Landon Weis, an effort that lifted Western to its first state title in seven years.

Lauren Gampper

St. Anne's Belfield field hockey

Gampper’s goal in overtime against Covenant last week made it very clear that St. Anne’s-Belfield’s field hockey team, a program that’s been dormant for a few years, is turning the corner. Gampper buried a shot on a short corner off a pass by Elise Van Arsdale to lift the Saints past the Eagles and continued a surge by the STAB hockey program that could make the postseason an interesting one for the Saints.

Evan Childress

Monticello golf

Childress has been to the Group AA tournament as an individual, but he wanted to go with his team this year. He made sure he did just that by torching Old Trail with a 71 to earn medalist honors in the Region II tournament, sparking the Mustangs to a region title and a state tournament berth.
