Taking Over
Taking over
She has some pretty big shoes to fill, but Jena McFaddin is looking forward to taking over the reins of Western Albemarle’s volleyball program.
“I’m a little nervous,” McFaddin said, “but I like the challenge.”

McFaddin, who was an assistant coach last year at Western, replaces Lance Rogers, who led the Warriors to nine Jefferson District championships in as many years at the school.
“I want to keep the winning tradition going at Western,” McFaddin said. “But my goal also is to instill in the players a love of the game and to help them understand that playing this sport is not a right — it’s a privilege.”
Her other goal, McFaddin said, is to lead the team to another appearance in the state tourney. Western advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
“We’re excited by the energy and passion Jena shows for the sport of volleyball,” Western Albemarle athletic director Steve Heon said. “We look forward to her continuing the tradition of success in volleyball that Western has enjoyed over the years.”
McFaddin knows a little something about success on the court. She was a four-year starter at James Madison University and played for the elite Austin Jrs. club program in Texas. While at JMU, the San Antonio native set school records for most digs in a season, holds the JMU and Colonial Athletic Association career digs record with 2,189, and ranks among the NCAA career leaders in digs. College Volleyball Update named her one of the top five liberos in the nation in 2006 and 2007.
Western setter Riley Martin said she’s looking forward to next season with McFaddin and noted that her teammates respect McFaddin’s competitive drive, knowledge of the sport, and no-nonsense coaching style.
“She’s s intense and serious but she’s calm at the same time.” Martin said. “She’s gone through all the same things we’re going through and really understands what it takes.”
McFaddin will have lots of talent to work with. The Warriors went undefeated in the district last season and are only losing one player to graduation — JD player of the Year Ana Asher.

Anything to say now? What idiot excuses can you come up with now for Western SWEEPING the district AGAIN!!! Powhatan, please...... That's my dollars worth you ignorant waste of life. Stick to message boards where you know what your talking about. TOLD YA SOOOOOO!!!!!!
Western Vball <3
Goodness.. everyone is just so jealous of western volleyball... it makes sense. :)
I love Jenna
Girls' athletics
I LOL at girls sports
This is coming from 2 Western
This is coming from 2 Western players, Marin Crowder and Katie Rossberg.
We think that Jena is completely qualified for the head coaching position of a successful volleyball program. She was an outstanding player in club and in college (she was one of the top 5 liberos in the nation) and has proved to be just as good of a coach as she is a player. Bashing her qualifications anonymously on the internet is pointless and cowardly. I hope that you are satisfied with your immature behavior, because we think these comments say a lot about your character. Thanks for your valuable insights!
enough already
Ok boys, and I mean boys. Enough is enough. There is a human being behind Jena McFaddin and children behind the players. A wise man once told me "let the players play, let the coaches coach and let the parents parent." We'll see what happens on the court in the fall.
Talk is cheap
Talk is cheap when you can do it Anonymously. How about putting a name with those comments so at the end of the season we can truly see who REALLY knew what they were talking about. Personally, Western MAY not win every game this season but if they did let's just say it wouldn't surprise me or the rest of the Western faithful. AND it seems to me a lot of this discussion has left out the biggest factor in most of this the young ladies who actually play the game. Seems to me what "lack of experience" the head coach may or may not have should be more than offset by a nearly complete returning of a team that has known for sometime now not only how to win, but win a lot! Don't write these girls off just yet..... - Ron Martin
re: and then there's the players
I think everyone here has forgotten about the players that have taken us this far in the first place. I have known these girls for years and there is not a better group of educated, athletic, and kind women around (unlike the blogs I am reading here, and I mean the kind part). Yes a coach is an important leader but without this group of women who have a desire to win, and a love of the game it would just be another team in the JD. Let them play their game on the court and leave the posturing aside.

No.. this is about a TEAM and their accomplishments. What a "moronic" statement. She has been named the coach of a TEAM! That team needs a good coach. Typical Western response.. attempting to put someone ahead of the tea(I)m . Notice how I put an "I" in team... did that just for you!
She proved nothing with Austin Jr's.. she "qualified".. " Qualified" is a major broad statement that apologists like you use as an argument!
As for your typical uneducated statement "sorry that i didn't get the job".. That's pretty weak. Sounds like you're her mother!
Face the facts.. she's an unproven sidekick... When Powhatan owns you next year and begins your freefall, come back to me. Until then, stick to baking brownies for team functions.. That's where your strength lies!
Ouch
Keeping it relevent....from the #1 Fan
This article is about an individual and her accomplishments... Not about college or club teams(funny how you didn't mention Austin Jr's) as a whole and where they stand within the Nation. I can only assume you live in Virginia, so as a state where does Virginia rank among the top Volleyball states??? Exactly... As far as a player she is ranked among the top in the Nation with players from Penn State, Nebraska, Texas, etc. Among the top 14 to be specific in her last two years. No matter what you put out there or say, you simply can't dispute fact... Please save us the trouble of wishing we had not wasted the last minute of our lives by reading your uneducated, no cent response. I'm sorry you applied for the position and didn't get it.... That's life...Savor it by wacthing Western in the State Tournament.

I have to laugh.. JMU is relevent in Women's volleyball on the National Scene ....how?? Ok.. maybe you're right.. There's Penn State, Texas, Nebraska and JMU.. Sorry.. That's pretty funny!
What is a CAV? Is that an acronym for a small central Virginia Volleyball club? They are relevent to national (or even state) Volleyball... how?? Take a look at the top teams club Teams in VA.. where is "CAV??"
Keep putting your 1/2 cent in on a message board and I'll continue to show you how ridiculous you sound.. Call me when she's "relevent" until then.. That's MY 2 cents worth..
Really?
Probably said the same thing in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and oh yeah let's not forget 2010. Jena is a fine young lady with not only a great grasp of the game but a fire burning inside to win it all! Sit back and enjoy the ride..
Comments from a #1 Fan....
As a player and coach... Stick to the facts.
Player: Check the JMU and NCAA D1 record books. She has quite the resume. Did we mention she was asked to tryout by USA volleyball..
Coach: Qualified for Nationals the first year she coached for Austin Jr's (One of, if not the most Elite Volleyball Club In the Nation); Took a young and inexpreienced CAV 14's team and made them a contender within the club relm within their first few matches; Elected to take the backseat (personal choice) to the first CAV's Nationals team and depsite a hard fought season thus far, has opened up a whole new outlook and appreciation for the sport of volleyball amongst her team.
Anybody can speculate and put their two cents on a comments board, but at this point, only time will tell, stick with the FACTS! Watch out, Western's on a state tourney run (that's my two cents). GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!
Yes "really"
retract that.. Powhatan, followed by Fluvanna, then WAHS.. Monroe leaves.. Powhatan will dominate
Yes "Really"
From some of the reports and from knowledge... she is more bark than actual bite! Monroe, followed by Fluvanna, the Western.. Once Lance leaves.. the program goes down hill!
new coach
Greaat choice by Western. They will be competive with a great returning group of players, and Jenna should get them far into the state tournament this year.
Really?
Who do YOU think will win the Jefferson District in 2011?
So much for WAHS Volleyball domination
It's over now!!!!!
