Orange wins Monticello round robin tourney

Monticello High hosted the annual Monticello Round Robin wrestling tournament Saturday, which brought together some top notch Group AA and A schools, a solid private school program in Benedictine and Group AAA Albemarle in a rock solid field filled out by the Mustangs and Orange County.

The Hornets finished at the top of the heap with 172.5 points to edge out Amherst who scored 168 points. Orange leaned on its depth in the middle weight classes, grabbing individual titles at 135, 140 and 145 with Mike Benner, Ryan Almond and Zach Ryder winning respectively.  Taylor Rudnick, another Hornets wrestler also placed second at 135. Orange’s other individual champ came at 171 where Connor Nave medaled.

Brandon Waller and Zach Morris both won their classes (125 and 152) for Albemarle with Morris also grabbing Most Valuable wrester honors for the tournament. Benedictine’s Dallas Wood at 103 and Stonewall Jackson heavyweight Lucas Ryan also earned MVW nods.

Anthony Jewett of Madison rounded out the individual champions from Central Virginia.
