After meeting with the school board on Wednesday, Albemarle Superindendent Pamela Moran detailed the County's budget proposal for 2010-2011, which was slashed by $5.3 million compared to last year.
Headlining the effects of the cuts are larger class sizes and the elimation of 20 jobs, but the new budget, if adopted, would also having a direct effect on high school athletic departments.
Students at both Western Albemarle and Monticello would no longer be able to participate on freshman basketball teams as the programs have been nixed. In addition, assistant coaches on the junior varisty level would be eliminated at all three county high schools (Albemarle, Western Albemarle and Monticello).
Students at both the junior varsity and varsity levels could also have to pay a $75 activity fee for all sports, and a cap of $425 has been set for families with multiple participants throughout the year.

Editor's Note — According to Albemarle Athletic Director Deb Tyson, while the assistant coaching positions at the JV level will be technically eliminated, volunteers will be allowed to assist the head coach.

school board reductions
This is a very big blow to scholastic sports although the only freshman team sports they have are basketball. Hopefully this is not a death sentence to the movement for Middle School sports in the county. The middle school sports program in the City Schools has been a tremendous success and has helped with the achievement gap and school attendance.

Wow, this is horrible for the county. I cant believe they would cut programs that help kids develope proper life skills. People under appreciate the value and life lessons that athletics teaches. I wonder why the first place people look to cut budgets is athletics? I vote to give all of the JV coaches and Feshman coaches a raise. I appreciate your commitment to the student athletes. Lets cut the budget by eliminating bus routes, so all of the students dont get picked up at their driveway and maybe have to walk a block to meet a group of other students and get on the bus together.
Assistant JV coaches
your aticle says that assistant coaches at the jv level would be eliminated. i didn't look at the details, but surely it must be that FUNDING for assistant coaches at the JV level has been eliminated. i'd hate to imagine JV football, for example, supervised by a single coach. Surely they will not ban volunteer coaches, will they?
JV coaches
According to the Albemarle County Public Schools document — the second link in the article — it says "Junior Varsity coaching assistants will be eliminated at all schools."
From the way it is worded, it sounds as though the position is gone. Nonetheless, we'll follow up with the Athletic Directors to find out if the position is gone or it's simply the money.

How sweet of the AHS AD to say that volunteers are still welcome. It would have really been a stretch for her to say that no one is allowed to work for free. Does this mean that the County will still be expending resources on doing background checks for these un-hired coaches, or will it all be on the cost-free "honor system"? Wonder what parents will think of that.
